Attachment Disorder: A child has difficulty forming and maintaining a healthy emotional relationship with caregivers. This often stems from early trauma experiences.

Causes of Attachment Disorder include:

•Early neglect or abuse

•Multiple caregivers

•Traumatic experiences

•Emotional unavailability of guardian/extended family

Attachment is the relationship formed between a parent and a child where the parent meets the child’s needs and comforts her in distress

•Secure attachment is formed through consistent, responsive caregiving and provides the child with a sense of security and trust

Activities That Promote Secure Attachment include:

•Choose a book and read it together

•Involve the child in preparing a meal

•Go for a walk together

•The child feels safe and secure when the parent is present

•Have a small snack time where you feed your child and engage in gentle conversation

•Comfort the child when she is upset

•If the child fears a thunderstorm, the parent might hold them and explain that they are safe
